A fire that destroyed much of Harbor View’s waterfront in 1907 remains one of the most significant events in the town’s history.
The fire began shortly after midnight and quickly spread through the buildings along the harbor. Strong winds pushed the flames from one structure to another; overwhelming the towns volunteer fire department.
Seventeen people were reported killed; including several children. More than 60 buildings were destroyed. A large portion of this being the fishing fleet. Hundreds of townsfolk were left without homes.
The fire destroyed Harbor View’s original town hall. Rebuilding began within months. Business owners and wealthier residents were able to rebuild along the waterfront; many working class families could not afford them. The rebuilding process changed Harbor View’s character and contributed to a division between the waterfront district and the neighborhoods that were father inland.
