As I reflect on my life, I realize that I didn’t truly learn how to stand up for myself until I moved to another country. Even then, I continued to people-please, putting others’ feelings before my own. Eventually, I grew tired of it. When I finally started speaking my mind and setting boundaries, I was seen as angry simply because I was no longer willing to stay silent.

Now, almost ten years later, I’ve learned the art of simply saying no. No to unnecessary drama. No to people who don’t treat me with respect. No to situations that disturb my peace. I’ve always tried to give people respect before passing judgment, but now I take my time before allowing anyone into my life. I’ve learned that not everyone deserves my trust, and that trust is something people must earn.

High school me would probably be surprised to see how cautious I’ve become about trusting others. But the truth is, my life is much more peaceful this way. I love reading, writing, and spending time with my animals. I don’t crave much beyond that. I’ve come to appreciate the quiet, the solitude, and the freedom of living life on my own terms.

The few human connections I do hold close are with my best friends, the ones who have stayed through it all. They’ve shown me what genuine friendship looks like, and I’m grateful for them.

I may not trust as easily as I once did, but I’ve learned to protect my peace, value myself, and understand that a quieter life with a few genuine connections is far more fulfilling than a crowded life filled with people who don’t truly belong.
